Hull Types
Displacement Hull

- move through water by pushing water aside
- cut through water with little propulsion
- best for slower boats with lots of stability
- ex: cruise ships, tankers, sailboats
Planing Hull
- rise up and glide on top of the water
- operate like displacement hull when at rest or at slow speeds
- best for boats with high speed
- Ex: speed boats
Ballast Tank
-separate compartment that holds water
-compensates for cargo
-used to provide stability
